The Centre Internet & Société in Paris, which belongs to CRNS, invited Nicolas to give a talk about the project. Right before his presentation, the organizer pulled his own printed copy of the Dr. Smartphone book (which can be seen as the ancestor to the Discarded Digital project). Nicolas introduced the motivations and methods we are using to study re-using and upcycling practices that concern computers, consoles, networked objects and electronics. He also showed ethnographic vignettes about the kind of knowledge and know-how amateurs are developing along the way. Discussions with colleagues dealt with the following themes and questions: what are the relationships between tech obsolescence and re-use ? Is there an equivalent to repairability index (indice de réparabilité) for re-use? How do cases in the West contrast with practices in the Global South?
