“Declining Technologies” seminar

Cloister of the Royaumont Abbey in France

Nicolas went to the 37th International Workshop organized by NeTWork in the gorgeous abbey of Royaumont (France). The topic this year was  “Decommissioning Aging Installations and Declining Technologies” and he gave an overview of the field research we are currently conducting. Given the general theme, Nicolas focused his presentation on the role of amateurs in dismantling digital technologies, and the discussion revolved around how it differs from other contexts ans scales (bigger infrastructures and objects such as nuclear plants or aircrafts, regulatory issues, etc.). The discussion in Royaumont were also an occasion to address the notion of technological trajectories and the various ways technologies “end”. In this context, discarded electronics and the various practices about them we are investigating shed some light on the afterlives of digital artifacts, and their neverending usage.
